Rio Test Event

The team has just returned from 12 days training in Rio.  They encountered perfect sailing weather, however it was cooler than what will be experienced at the Paralympics.  The boys were hosted by Torben Grael (a great friend to a number of Kiwi Yachties) Commodore of the Rio Yacht Club, who did everything to make the team feel welcome and have a successful trip.

There were 14 races over 7 days (the Paralympics will consist of 11 races over 6 days) and were sailed in shifty conditions with very tricky tides.  Great to be able to experience this and get an understanding of tides etc. prior to the Paralympics

Kiwi Gold finished First in 3 races however unfortunately in 2 of the races they received a UFD ** disqualification from these races.  They finished 3rd in 3 races, and their worst performance was an 8th (apart from the UFD’s, which was lesson better learnt in the test event rather than the ‘real thing’).  They ended the regatta 7th overall.

The boys returned very happy with what they had learnt and their speed and recent modifications to the boat.

If you would like to see photos of the event or read more the following Facebook page is worth a look.

The team will head to Sydney at the end of July and in August to train against the Australian Sonar team.

**UFD = when any part of the boat is on the course side of the start line within a minute of the start.  Even if you are behind the start line prior to the start you are still automatically disqualified.  A harsh penalty, but this rule will be enforced during the Paralympics.
